Cupping Therapy

Although “cupping” or “fire cupping” may be considered to be a “new” type of alternative care, in reality, it has been around for thousands and thousands of years, dating back to the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Asians. It has been incorporated into medical practices across the globe, and many have utilized this therapy at home by grandmothers and other family members that have passed along this type of therapy from generation to generation.
When fire cupping is performed, the licensed practitioner utilizes special glasses and uses fire and alcohol to quickly capture the fire within the glass in an effort to create suction on the patient’s skin. The purpose is to promote blood flow, release heat, decrease pain and/or inflammation, and to promote oxygen to the otherwise depleted area. Occasional temporary redness and or bruising may be experienced by the patient. Although burns may be a risk, very rarely does it happen with an experienced practitioner. Cupping is excellent for improving circulation, digestion, wheezing and difficult coughs and colds, and spasmed muscles. For those who are weary of having needle acupuncture performed, fire cupping is an excellent alternative to needle acupuncture. In some cases, both acupuncture and fire cupping is utilized together as a form of treatment.
Is it painful?
Although a slight sense of “pulling” of the skin may be experienced, there should not be any pain associated with the actual fire cupping.
How should I feel after I have received fire cupping?
Following a course of care with fire cupping, the patient should leave refreshed, relaxed, and in less pain.
