Why Movers Are Especially Vulnerable to Back Injuries And How to Protect Your Spine

Moving is one of the most physically demanding jobs in any industry. Professional movers spend their days lifting heavy furniture, carrying awkward loads, and navigating stairs, narrow hallways, and uneven surfaces. Over time, this constant physical stress can take a serious toll on the spine and surrounding muscles.

In a chiropractic practice, it’s common to see patients whose back and joint pain is directly connected to the demands of moving work. Understanding these risks — and learning how to manage them — can help movers stay healthy, productive, and pain-free longer.

The Daily Physical Demands of Moving

Unlike controlled lifting in a gym, movers rarely deal with balanced or predictable weight. Furniture, appliances, and boxed items often shift during transport, forcing the body to compensate in unnatural ways.

Most moving jobs involve:

Over weeks and months, this adds up. Even movers who start their careers in excellent shape can develop chronic pain if proper care and technique aren’t prioritized.

Many of these issues are similar to the disc and nerve-related conditions discussed in our article on lumbar disc injuries and sciatica.

Common Injuries We See in Movers

Some of the most frequent conditions affecting movers include:

Many of these conditions respond well to comprehensive pain management care.

A Real Example From Our Practice

One example that stands out is Steven, a professional mover who works at EZ Movers and Storage. He first came into our office after dealing with recurring lower back and shoulder pain that had slowly built up over several years on the job.

Like many movers, Steven had learned to push through discomfort and assumed soreness was simply part of the work. He hadn’t fully realized how much strain repetitive lifting and long moving days were placing on his spine.

After beginning regular chiropractic care and learning simple adjustments to his posture and lifting habits, he started noticing meaningful improvements. He experienced less stiffness in the mornings, better recovery between jobs, and fewer flare-ups after long workdays.

More importantly, Steven became more aware of how his daily habits affected his long-term health. He began prioritizing stretching, proper technique, and recovery in a way he hadn’t before. That awareness alone made a major difference in helping him stay consistent and avoid more serious injuries.

We frequently see similar recovery stories from patients who share their experiences on our testimonials page.

How Movers Can Reduce Injury Risk

While moving will always be physically demanding, there are practical steps movers can take to protect their backs.

1. Focus on Proper Lifting Technique

2. Use Equipment Whenever Possible

Dollies, straps, sliders, and ramps significantly reduce unnecessary strain. Using the right tools consistently makes a measurable difference over time.

3. Prioritize Recovery

Stretching, hydration, and adequate rest help reduce inflammation and muscle tightness. Skipping recovery often leads to accumulated damage.

4. Seek Preventive Care

In addition to chiropractic care, many movers benefit from complementary therapies such as acupuncture for muscle tension and inflammation.

When to Consider Professional Care

Movers should consider seeing a healthcare professional if they experience:

Early treatment often leads to faster recovery and helps prevent long-term complications.

Our pain management services are designed to address both acute injuries and chronic conditions related to physically demanding work.

Final Thoughts

Moving is essential work that requires strength, endurance, and skill. But without proper care, the physical demands of the job can lead to lasting injuries.

By combining good technique, consistent recovery, and preventive care, movers can protect their spines and extend their careers. Paying attention to early warning signs and taking proactive steps today can prevent years of discomfort in the future.

If you work in a physically demanding profession and are experiencing back or joint pain, learning more about disc-related conditions and treatment options can be an important first step.

Facial Rejuvenation or Cosmetic Acupuncture

Facial Rejuvenation or Cosmetic Acupuncture has been utilized in the Orient for thousands of years and has slowly made its way to North America. In fact, cosmetic acupuncture was first utilized by queens, political authorities, and rulers of Egypt, China and the Middle East…all in
an effort to help restore and rejuvenate women’s beauty.

By applying fine, sterile needles on specific points on the face, wrists, legs and feet, this ancient technique helps promote blood flow and oxygen, increase circulation, and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen is also restored. Typically, anywhere between
10-15 treatments are utilized and specific protocol must be followed. For this reason, it is essential to consult with Dr. Skokos prior to setting up treatment visits to determine if you are the right candidate to receive this intricate type of care. No chemical peals are performed. Surgical procedures are not implemented; and no medicine is injected into the skin by Dr. Skokos. This is a completely NATURAL approach to restoring skin health and rejuvenation. Once treatment is completed, the effects can last typically from 6-12 months, depending on the condition and health of the patient’s skin. Maintenance treatment every 6 weeks may be
recommended in certain cases.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is not only utilized for the purpose of rejuvenating skin; it is also used to help perform breast and butt or gluteal lifts. Again, neither injections, cutting nor surgical procedures are ever performed at ChiroCare Clinic Wellness Center. Begin benefitting from the benefits of Cosmetic Acupuncture! You’ll be sure to get compliments from those around you, and will look and feel better about yourself

How Chiropractic Can Help Lumbar Disc Issues (Herniations, Sciatica, Low back pain)

Have you been suffering from low back pain with buttock and/or leg burning, numbness or weakness? Have you gone to the doctor and have been prescribed a muscle relaxant or pain medication, but can’t seem to get rid of the pain? Have you been diagnosed with “sciatica” or “lumbar disc herniation?” If so, you may want to consider alternative means of care including chiropractic and/or acupuncture to help rid the agonizing pain and discomfort.

The lumbar spine consists of 5 vertebrae or bones. In between each vertebra is a disc, or a jelly-like substance that acts as a cushion between each of the vertebra. The discs can be thought of as “shock absorbers.” Between each vertebra are nerve roots which carry information to and from the spinal cord and various parts of the body. The spinal cord is surrounding the spinal column (or vertebra), nerve roots, ligaments, muscles and tissues. When damage is done to the discs and its surrounding tissue, the discs become weak and can protrude into the spinal canal or to the surrounding nerve root or surrounding tissue. The surrounding tissue is highly innervated by many nerves and has a great blood supply to the surrounding areas. When the nerve root is irritated, various forms of altered sensation occur including pain, numbness, and/or weakness along the nerve root.

Many times the patient can present with low back pain with pain going into the hip, or groin, or into the back or front of thigh and/or down to the toes.  Many people call leg pain “sciatica,” however few realize that the cause may be a disc herniation or pathology or some other problem such as disc pathology degeneration of the discs or joints (arthritis of the discs or joints), or spinal canal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal). Nevertheless, this type of presentation requires evaluation by a physician and possibly an Xray and/or an MRI of the lumbar spine.

• Possible female discharge
• Weakened immune system/increased probability of getting sick

• Not consuming (a good, quality) probiotic
• Stress
• Reoccurring infections
• Poor diet
• Lack of exercise

Who can be affected by dysbiosis?
Men, women, and even children of all ages can be affected.

Is it treatable?

How Chiropractors Can Treat Migraine Headaches

Have you ever experienced abruptly seeing flashing lights that can be described as a “disco ball” or a “fire engine?” Or perhaps zig-zags that creep up on the side of your vision a few minutes before the onset of a throbbing headache? Have you ever experienced dizziness, nausea and/or vomiting prior to or followed by a sharp, throbbing or stabbing pain on the side of your head? If you suffer from these symptoms, you may be suffering from a migraine headache. Other symptoms can also include numbness in the one arm, inability to speak, light and/or sound sensitivity followed by moodiness. But before assuming anything, consider going to the ER or getting evaluated and examined to rule out any other serious conditions.

Although there are various forms of migraine headaches, each may have a slightly different presentation. Nevertheless, the headache and its associated symptoms can be excruciating, annoying, and sometimes a frightening experience. They can sneak up on us when least expected, causing an interference with our daily activities. Work and family life is typically affected. They are a health ailment that should not be overlooked. Furthermore, migraine headaches are a horrific malady that affect many people, females more than males. Although hormones, stress, inconsistent sleep patterns, and genetic factors are believed to contribute to the occurrences, other factors include diet, dehydration, consumption of red wine, stress, and other factors including lack of certain vitamins and supplements that can contribute to their triggers. Although medication—both prophylactically as well as during the onset can be administered, there are other natural alternatives that can be incorporated to keep these horrific headaches under control.
Once evaluated and examined, and once the diagnosis of migraine headache is provided by your doctor, it is crucial to find the cause and culprit. Chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, dietary recommendations and changes, as well as nutritional supplementation are a few recommendations that can be considered in conquering this health ailment.

How does chiropractic assist a person who suffers from migraine headaches?
Chiropractic care can help relieve restrictions, or lack of movement in the cervical spine (or neck area) that otherwise can cause neck tension, muscle spasms, and headaches. By performing an adjustment, Dr. Skokos can help assist these joints more properly so that future migraine headaches do not occur.

How does acupuncture help a person who suffers from migraine headaches?
Acupuncture helps balance certain “meridians” or pathways in the body that have “stagnated qi” or “blocked energy.” By inserting small, fine acupuncture needles to specific points of the body, the energy begins to flow, thus allowing more blood flow and oxygen to the depleted areas. The patient typically feels much calmer and more relaxed as well. Once the body has been balanced via proper blood flow and oxygen to the designated areas, the symptoms of the migraine headache are decreased and many times even controlled or eliminated.
