Principles of Functional Medicine

Principles of Functional Medicine addresses various health conditions targeting specific organ systems of the body by finding the cause of the problem and helping treat the individual rather than the disease. Health ailments that are treated utilizing the Principles of Functional Medicine approach include those associated with hormonal issues, digestive concerns, endocrine complaints, and the immune system.  The use of medicine is never prescribed or utilized, but rather the patient’s condition is assisted by helping the body restore its healthy state.

Infant Chiropractic

Chiropractic is important to people of ALL ages–ranging from the newborn to the older, wiser individual. By implementing mild, gentle techniques to remove nerve interference and pressure that is placed on the nervous system, the corresponding organs are able to function optimally. In addition, chiropractic is an extremely safe approach to helping children develop into a healthy adult. It is an excellent, effective approach in supporting a healthy immune and nervous system, and is just as effective in successfully treating earaches, minimizing the duration of colds and fevers, and getting the colicky baby out of discomfort…all without medication.

Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a type of alternative treatment where specific points known as “acupoints,” are stimulated manually (also known as “acupressure”), or by inserting fine, sterile needles.  Acupuncture originated over 5,000 years ago in the Orient and quickly spread to Europe and other parts of Asia. It is not until recently (approximately 1970’s) that acupuncture began being utilized here in the states.

How does Acupuncture work?

Nothing is actually injected into the body with acupuncture; instead, meridians, or “pathways” in the body are cleared when specific acupoints are stimulated manually or via needles. This allows the “qi” (pronounced “chi”) to flow through the previously blocked pathways. In fact, from a physiological perspective, there is an increase in cellular ATP, improved circulation and blood flow, increased oxygen, and a release of endorphins. This results in diminished pain, improved body function, and a healthier internal environment in the body.

What is Acupuncture used for?

Acupuncture works wonders for a wide range of conditions. It is very effective for a number of conditions…. The real question is what ISN’T acupuncture used for? Over the years, acupuncture has successfully treated the following health conditions:

Whatever your reasons are for utilizing acupuncture, it is a safe, natural, alternative approach to allopathic medicine that has been successfully utilized for many centuries on people all over the world.

Scared of Needles?

Some patients are fearful of the tiny needles. For this reason, Dr. Skokos also uses laser treatment on specific acupoints which has similar results to that of acupuncture. Laser treatment can be utilized on the ears, arms and legs, and/or other body parts to produce the desired effect.

Feel free to contact Dr. Skokos with any questions or concerns about acupuncture or any other health conditions that you may have.

Facial Rejuvenation

Facial Rejuvenation or Cosmetic Acupuncture involves inserting fine sterile needles into the face, neck, hands, wrists, legs in an effort to help minimize and soften the appearance of deep and fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help take years off of your face without the use of Botox, chemical peels or surgery. In addition, cosmetic acupuncture can also help minimize dark circles, puffy eyes, double chin, sagging skin and droopy eyelids. Finally, facial rejuvenation results in tightening skin pores, brightening the eyes, moistening the patient’s skin (from the inside out), as well as keeping acne under control. Your skin will feel nourished and refreshed, promoting a natural glow and healthy complexion without all of the harmful chemicals and procedures.

How is this done if no injections or surgery?

By stimulating various, specific acupoints on the face, neck, hands and wrists, and legs, the skin tissue is enhanced, providing a youthful, radiant glow.

Who would benefit from this procedure?

Anyone who would like to delay the process of aging and who would like to look and feel up to 10-15 years younger.

Can I do Cosmetic Acupuncture if I had Botox?

Yes. Cosmetic Acupuncture will maintain the effectiveness of Botox, so it will save you a couple of injections a year.

How many treatments should I expect?

A course of treatment includes 11 total treatments. The initial treatment involves a balancing treatment. For the best results, treatments 2-10 are performed 2 to 3 treatments a week over the course of a month.

How long is each session?

Each session can range anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes in length.

What else is Cosmetic Acupuncture beneficial?

Cosmetic Acupuncture is excellent for breast and/or gluteal (but) lifts as well.

What else is involved?

In addition to the acupuncture treatments, blood work (which can be done in Dr. Skokos’ office) may be required. In addition, particular dietary changes and consumption of specific supplements are also incorporated into the treatment plan. Compliance to care is key. Finally, a :before” and “after” picture will be taken with your permission.

How does Cosmetic Acupuncture differ from Western Medicine?

Unlike Western Medicine which utilizes Botox injections, peels, and face lifts, there is no microtrauma to the skin collagen and elastin. In addition, there are no injections, cutting, or harsh chemical peels. Finally, there is no cutting of the acupuncture meridians.

Dr. Skokos must perform an intake and evaluation to determine that there are no contraindications to care. Please call Dr. Skokos today to set up an appointment and begin looking and feeling years younger!

Pain Management

At Chiro Care Clinic, Dr. Skokos utilizes a wide variety of approaches and techniques in an effort to get her patients out of pain. Although medication and  injections are never prescribed at ChiroCare Clinic, as part of her guided treatment plan, Dr. Skokos uses any one or a combination of the following to decrease a patient’s pain:

Chiropractic, Acupuncture Fire Cupping, Electric Stim, & Therapeutic Ultrasound, Soft Tissue Manipulation, Axial Distraction, McKenzie Technique, Nutritional Supplementation. Also, X-rays and lab analysis may be clinically indicated to help determine the cause and most appropriate treatment. These can be performed on site at a very reasonable charge.

Pain arising from disc problems, headaches, arthritis, muscle spams, or injuries typically respond well to the techniques offered by Dr. Skokos.

Chiropractic & Soft Tissue Manipulation

With chiropractic care, Dr. Skokos uses her hands to manually palpate or feel the spinal joints in an effort to locate any areas of the body that are “restricted” or are not moving properly which in turn can affect range of motion and produce pain.  When Dr. Skokos locates an area of restriction, utilizing the Diversified Technique, she manipulates the restricted joint(s) and/or fascia and muscles in an effort to increase range of motion, decrease pain, and to relax spasms and painful muscles. A “pop” may be heard during an adjustment; however, do not be alarmed as this is gas being released within the joints. Adjustments are non-invasive and very safe. So safe that they can be performed on any age patient—from the newborn to the older patients bearing 90+ years of age.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a means of treatment that utilizes needles, laser, or manual pressure over specific acupoints, or locations on the body that have stagnated “qi” or energy.  By stimulating these particular acupoints, the energy is stimulated and released throughout the body.  Acupuncture can be used for pain control, re-balancing energy, decreasing the effects of anxiety and stress, for appetite control, and cosmetic purposes, ie., decreasing the appearance of fine facial lines and wrinkles without any injections. Treatment can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 60 minutes, depending on what condition is being treated. Acupuncture is safe for all ages and is an excellent means of keeping the body balanced and looking and feeling healthy—from the inside out.

(Fire) Cupping Therapy

Utilizing a glass cup with fire inserted, air is trapped and suctioned on the patient’s skin during fire cupping. Fire cupping is performed on various parts of the patient’s body to decreasing pain, inflammation, tension, and stress by removing harmful toxins and chemicals from within the body. Typically, anywhere from 1 to 10 cups can be placed on the back and other parts of the body to gain the desired effect. Fire cupping is also very effective in diminishing cold and flu-like symptoms.

Knee on Trac

Knee on Trac is an advanced, non-surgical device that helps decrease pressure within the knee joint, thereby decreasing pain and improving overall mobility of the knee and one’s body. By decreasing pressure within the knee joint, increased blood and oxygen flow into the joint promoting healing of the damaged tissue. It is a safe and effective means of treating knee conditions, including pain secondary to advanced arthritis, meniscal tears, and genu valgus (to name a few). For many, Knee on Trac is an excellent means of conservative therapy and has helped many opt out of having surgery.

Please refer to the pictures below. The first picture demonstrates a patient on the Knee on Trac. Below the patient, please refer to Picture A and Picture B. Picture A on the left demonstrates a patient with advanced arthritis in her knee PRIOR to implementing therapy with Knee on Trac; Picture B on the right demonstrates xrays of the same patient AFTER 12 visits of Knee on Trac over approximately 1 month time. Please note an increase in disc space on the inner and outer joint spaces noted in Picture B. As a result, the patient is able to go up and down the stairs with greater ease, stand for prolonged time at work, get up from a seated position, and walk with minimal discomfort:

Chiropractic

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic medicine is a branch of alternative medicine where the licensed physician evaluates and treats disorders of the body via implementing spinal manipulative therapy (or an adjustment). Because the spinal column has a number of nerves that innervate or control organs including the heart, lungs, stomach, as well as the extremities such as the arms and legs, palpation of the the spine will reveal any restrictions or subluxations. These subluxations do not allow the joint to move properly, and in turn, the affects the functioning of the corresponding end organ. Spinal manipulative therapy removes nerve interference and results in proper nerve flow and optimal functioning of the end organ. Chiropractic care is effective for a number of reasons: maintaining health and wellness, pain control, improving function of the body, and increasing range of motion of the individual. For these reasons, chiropractic is used by athletes, actors and actresses, and models including Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Cindy Crawford, Chuck Norris, Christie Brinkley, and the list goes on and on…
